This is the beta version of the WHO AFRO DPC Data Portal. It is currently undergoing internal review and quality assurance processes and is not yet approved for public release.

Our Mission

We are committed to strengthening Africa’s public health infrastructure by transforming raw health data into clear, actionable insights. Focused on timely disease reporting and outbreak management, our mission is to support health officials, researchers, and local communities in identifying and addressing emerging health threats. Our platform is designed to empower rapid response and enhance community resilience across the region.

Our Strategy

At the heart of our approach lies the Precision Public Health Strategy, which champions data-driven interventions tailored to Africa’s unique health landscape. By integrating advanced analytics, robust data systems, and real-time surveillance, we aim to target high-risk populations and regions effectively. Our strategy is built on four pillars: strengthening data systems, deploying innovative digital solutions, leveraging advanced analytics, and fostering partnerships. These initiatives ensure evidence-based decision-making, enhance resource allocation, and amplify the impact of health interventions, ultimately driving equitable and sustainable health outcomes across the continent.

Our Analytical Approach

Leveraging state-of-the-art data science methods, we convert complex datasets into meaningful insights that directly impact public health outcomes in Africa. Our tools empower detailed disease surveillance by mapping outbreak patterns, forecasting potential future trends, and offering health authorities the evidence needed to act rapidly. Through the fusion of innovative technology with on-ground expertise, we are dedicated to enhancing disease monitoring and safeguarding community well-being across the continent.

Ending disease in Africa: vision, strategies and special initiatives, 2023-2030

While there has been real progress in addressing the burden of disease in the WHO African region, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the link between health, economics and security, as the region saw decades of progress threatened, including positive trends in decreasing inequality. In the African Region the momentum towards achieving the 2030 SDG disease burden reduction targets (SDG targets 3.3, 3.4 and 3B) has stalled.

The COVID-19 pandemic was also a major threat to gains made, such as the eradication of polio in the region, declared in 2020; reduced numbers of new HIV infections in 2021 compared to 2010; and passing the 2020 milestone of the End TB Strategy, with a 22% reduction in new cases compared with 2015. However, the pandemic also disrupted essential health services in 92% of countries globally, 22.7 million children missed basic immunization, there was an increase in malaria and TB, and global deaths from TB rose for the first time since 2015.

Additionally, the African region is seriously affected by climate change, with little resilience since nearly 60% of the region’s population is rural and highly dependent on the climate system for food production. During the COVID-19 pandemic, outbreaks of malaria and dengue fever were reported in Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC, pointing to the influence of climate change on health. This is likely to worsen with increasing climate change, thus increasing pressure on the region’s fragile health system.

The Precision Public Health Strategy: Driving data-informed health policies and interventions in the WHO African Region

Precision Public Health (PPH) is about delivering “the right intervention at the right time, every time, to the right population.”1. It focuses on a people-centred approach, identifying communities at risk through the innovative use of technologies innovations and analytics. Applying PPH will ensure that countries will deliver on the principle of “leaving no one behind”.

Precision public health is focused on innovation, harnessing data-driven evidence, targeted interventions and cutting-edge technologies to refine and amplify the impact of health strategies, customizing them to the unique needs and attributes of specific populations or individuals.
