Trends in Immunization Coverage Across African Countries
An overview of immunization coverage trends for different antigens (BCG, DPT1, DPT3, MCV1, and MCV2) from 2018 to 2023 across African countries. This analysis helps identify gaps in immunization efforts and assess progress toward the 90% coverage target

Key Information

Analyzing coverage trends by province reveals disparities that highlight both successes and challenges. While some provinces consistently meet immunization targets for antigens others struggle to achieve equitable coverage. Identifying these gaps can help prioritize resources, scale successful strategies, and ensure that no child is left behind in the immunization efforts

Case Definition:

The Coverage for immunization indicators is calculated by dividing number of vaccinations given by the number of target children/mothers in the specific location x 100 (given in %).

Number of expected live births was used as target to calculate BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) and HepB (Hepatitis B) birth dose vaccination coverage.

Data sources:

Data are based on submissions received from member states through the Country offices and ISTs through DHIS2.
Data are monthly aggregate summary of routine immunization summaries shared by country offices through the ISTs.

Population data:

Based on country utility databases submitted through the ISTs annually, estimated population disaggregated by age group, from the period of 2000 to 2024
